Applying for Admission
Moore College (MTC) offers PhD programs in collaboration with both the University of Sydney (USyd) and the University of Western Sydney (UWS). Inquiries for enrolment in either of these programs should be addressed in the first instance to the Director of Postgraduate Studies, Moore College through the Registrar (Registrar@moore.edu.au).

The process of applying for admission into a MTC PhD program involves four stages. They are:
1. Stage 1 – Provision of Information
1.1. Provide the College with the information requested on Postgraduate Application Data Sheet;
1.2. Certified academic transcripts for all tertiary qualifications to date;
1.3. Proof of studies in either Greek or Hebrew to at least Level III (i.e. at the level of 3rd Year units in a three-year degree).
1.4. A certified copy of an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) result with at least 7.0 overall. All applicants whose first language is not English are required to sit an examination administered by the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). These exams are held on a regular basis in most African and Asian countries. Details of the nearest centre may be obtained by contacting your local Australian or British Consulate. Please see the IELTS requirements at www.ielts.org. Further information for international applicants is available by clicking HERE.
1.5. Two personal references, including one from your current minister/pastor or denominational leader. For reference format click HERE. At least one reference should include evidence that on graduation the applicant is likely to have a ministry leading to an increase of ministry in the wider churches that is directly dependent on the benefits that would be gained from the proposed research. If part-time candidacy is being sought at least one reference should provide evidence that you will be available for full-time study for at least the first two semesters of research and that thereafter at least 20 hours per week will be available for study. The applicant should ask each referee to return the reference, in a sealed envelope, to the applicant. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that the references reach Moore College at the appropriate time.
1.6. Two academic references. The applicant should ask each referee to return the reference, in a sealed envelope, to the applicant. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that the references reach Moore College at the appropriate time. The request for the references should explain to the referee that the reference is for the purpose of considering an application for PhD candidacy. For reference format click HERE.
1.7. A piece of writing, of between 2000 and 5000 words. The purpose of this is to enable an assessment of the level at which the applicant is working and the applicant’s ability to write clearly and mount a coherent argument. A marked thesis (honours or masters by research) may be substituted for this item.
2. Stage 2 – Preliminary Interview
Depending on the foregoing, a preliminary interview is arranged with the Director of Postgraduate Studies or a person on behalf of the Director. If the applicant is not able to undertake the interview in Sydney, contact details will be provided for the nearest suitable interviewer to enable the applicant to arrange for an appointment for an interview. All costs associated with attending this interview are the responsibility of the applicant.
3. Stage 3 – Moore College Application
3.1. Depending on the outcome of the preliminary interview Moore College application forms are provided. At this time a supervisor-designate will be nominated.
3.2. The Moore College application form must be accompanied by a research proposal. It may be prepared in consultation with the supervisor-designate and is to be a 2,000 word essay detailing the proposed thesis topic and approach to research. The following headings should be included in the essay:

When endorsed by the MTC supervisor-designate this thesis proposal is submitted with the MTC application form to the MTC Postgraduate Committee for approval.
3.3. Once application forms and associated documents are received, the Postgraduate Committee reviews the application and decides whether the application should be endorsed to the Board of Studies.
4. Stage 4 – University Application
4.1. If candidature is approved by the Board of Studies on the recommendation of the Postgraduate Committee an application for enrolment at the particular university shouold be prepared and sent to the MTC Registrar. Applications for USyd close on 31 October and 30 April for the following semester. A USyd application form may be obtained by clicking HERE. Applications for UWS close on 31st October for the following year. A UWS application form may be obtained by clicking HERE. The completed university application form, together with all required attachments, MUST be submitted to the MTC Registrar for lodgement with the university concerned.
4.2. As part of its process of identifying a suitable supervisor USyd requires applicants to meet with a member of the USyd academic staff before the application is submitted by the MTC Registrar. The MTC supervisor-designate &/or Registrar will assist the applicant to make contact with the appropriate Department Head at USyd for this purpose.
4.3. UWS identifies its supervisor after the application form has been submitted by MTC and no contact with the UWS is necessary prior to submitting the university application form to the MTC Registrar.
4.4. Once the university application form has been completed to the satisfaction of the MTC Registrar, the application will be forwarded by MTC with its endorsement to the university concerned.
4.5. A copy of all correspondence received by the applicant from the university concerned must be forwarded to MTC.
