Responsibilities of the Candidate

As part of his or her responsibilities, the candidate should:

1. Proceed diligently and intelligently with the research as agreed with the supervisor;

2. Become familiar with and abide by the regulations of the College that govern the degree;

3. Discuss with the supervisor the type of assistance considered most useful;

4. Keep to the agreed schedule of meeting with the supervisor;

5. Take the initiative in raising problems and difficulties and share responsibility for seeking solutions;

6. Maintain the progress of the research in accordance with the stages agreed with the supervisor, including in particular the presentation of written material in sufficient time to allow for comments and discussion before proceeding to the next stage;

7. Discuss progress towards, and impediments to, maintaining the agreed timetable with the supervisor at regular intervals (at least twice per year);

8. Participate in the College's program of Advanced Topic Seminars. This includes the presentation, at least once per year, of an abstract of their research to date;

9. Provide a formal annual report on progress to the Postgraduate Committee through the supervisor by 1st September each year, and complete one other pro-forma report on progress each year;

10. Accept the responsibility to produce the final copies of the thesis and to ensure that it is in accord with the relevant requirements, including the standard of presentation and the quality of English expression, spelling, grammar and syntax.
