Both those undertaking doctoral or post-doctoral research and ministers on study leave are welcome to spend time at the College.
Doctoral and Post-doctoral Research
The College invites applications from those undertaking doctoral or post-doctoral research to become visiting scholars for a period of one term full-time. Visiting Scholars are offered the following:
Full access to the Library
Use, in the general faculty area, of a terminal with full Internet access. Scholars need to provide their own laptop computer (or the like). If they have a modem an e-mail service is available free of charge.
An invitation to join the Faculty for morning tea each day of term and to dine with other students for weekday lunch and Tuesday evening dinner.
Depending on demand, single scholars may take a room in John Chapman House. Married scholars need to find their own accommodation. We are able to supply contact information for local Realtors who should be contacted directly.
Applicants should provide:
A full CV, detailing professional experience, research activities and publications, etc.;
A description of the area of study;
Proposed dates of intended stay; and
A letter of introduction from a senior academic who knows your work well.
Applications for the honorary role of Visiting Scholar are considered by the Principal in consultation with the Director of Postgraduate Studies. The role is without remuneration.
There is a flat fee (in Australian dollars) for up to one term (7 weeks) of $400. This covers use of the Library but does not cover meals in the Dining Room or Accommodation. All students enrolled at MTC receive full library access included with their fees. For Visiting scholars library membership is available from $165. Accommodation in single rooms is subject to availability ($235 per week, full-board).
Obtaining the requisite visa to enter Australia is the responsibility of overseas scholars.
Ministers on Study Leave
The College offers a program of 'guided reading' for theology graduates in full-time ministry. It is a personalised program suitable for any theology graduate who wishes to take time out from ministry. It can be a time of intense preparation for ongoing ministry or a period of spiritual refreshment and reflection.
A minimum of one week is recommended and participants are encouraged to interact with the College community for the time. Participants are invited to join the Faculty each weekday for monring tea in the Faculty Common Room. Meals may be taken in the Dining Room at the casual rate. Two consultations with a faculty member are offered and full access to the Library is provided. Borrowing may be arranged for a fee. Preparation of a written report on the experience is encouraged but no length is specified. Sitting-in on selected lectures my be arranged.
