M.Th. - Appeals Policy
1. Candidates wishing to query a Research Project examination result should first consult their supervisor. Only then may they apply in writing with reasons to the Registrar for a re-mark. A fee of $30 is charged for re-marking Research Projects and a cheque should accompany the letter. Where this results in an upward adjustment of the marks by 5% or more, the fee may be refunded.
2. If the degree is not awarded (see Section 4.3.6.26, above) then the candidate may appeal to the Registrar in writing within one month of receiving the letter of notification. In order to consider the appeal, the Director of Postgraduate Studies will convene an appeals panel consisting of one academic member of the Governing Board of the College, an academic external to the College, the Academic Dean, another member of the Board and himself. The panel must within one month bring a recommendation to the Board of Studies. The recommendation may be one of the following:
2.1. that insufficient or unfounded reasons have been supplied by the student to support the appeal and that no change be made in the decision of the Board of Studies; or
2.2. that the candidate be invited to revise part or all of the thesis and re-submit it for examination; or
2.3. that the thesis be reassessed by the appointment of another examiner external to the College who will prepare a report in terms of the categories set out in Section 4.3.6.26.
3. The decision of the Board of Studies, taking into account the recommendations of the appeals panel, shall be final. No one who has acted as the candidate’s supervisor may be part of the appeals panel. If the Academic Dean or the Director of Postgraduate Studies has acted as the candidate's supervisor, then another member of the Board of Studies will be appointed in his place.
